Backbone Animated Video: The Process

Choosing the Topic

This project was assigned to us and we had to choose whether to do an animated video on a poem or song. After hearing about this project I automatically knew I wanted to do a music video type of motion graphics with the lyrics. This video is for the song “Backbone” by Daughtry. The beats, tone, and overall feeling of this song made for many interesting ideas to play around with before I settled on the final look. Once this video was done I wanted the video to show that no matter what, we can all get up and break away from what is holding us down and rise up to new heights.

Planning the Video

Like all projects, one must plan it out. While it’s hard to show a video with many moving parts to it on paper, it’s possible. I first planned it out by doing a storyboard with each frame showing what i want it to look like. Then underneath I wrote done the ideas I had for effects and any other motion aspects I thought of doing.

First Version of Video

Like all projects, the first draft is never the final one. I did, however, learn a lot from the first version. I didn’t notice until I got the feedback saying there was somewhat of a disconnect and that some parts don’t make sense unless it’s explained which isn't what I wanted it to be. The walk cycle needed a lot of work, and with the time I had to complete this, I didn’t have the enough of it to make it perfect. While it may have been visually nice it didn’t have an impact that I wanted. Afterwards, I lost the motivation to improve on it and had to take a step back from it for a little bit.

The Final Design

After a short break I came back with motivation and ideas. Even though there are parts I wish I could improve on, change, and add, I was able to create a motion graphics video that I’m proud of. From the start of this project I wanted to make sure that the message I wanted to get across was never lost, in that whatever may be holding us down we can break free from it and soar to new heights and have a better life. In the final verison I played around with the type more by animating it. In my short break I gathered inspiration for this and part of the inspiration included different tutorials on how to create unique effects and how to do interesting things in After Effects, and in return I was able to create a better motion video.
